Simple Creatures came as a surprise to most folks via Twitter in late January.
Alex Gaskarth, front man of the pop-punk band All Time Low, would later reveal on his Instagram that he and Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 had been creating music together for a while, well before their official Twitter reveal, but it was still a surprise to many.
Hi. We are Simple Creatures. We just woke up from a very long sleep. We have so much to tell you, but for the moment, all we can say is that we are glad you are here.
We made music for you …

The idea of Simple Creatures started after Hoppus returned from Blink-182’s tour for their 2016 album, California. As he told Los Angeles radio station ALT 98.7 FM, the project came about after he “fell into this really awful depression,” adding:
“I had this idea that I would make a record with all of my friends, all these people that along the way you see at a show, you tour together. So, I got in the studio with Alex, he was the first one that I called. And we wrote a song that I loved, and then he came back the next day an we wrote another song, and we wrote another song.”
“He was really great in the studio and has been a friend forever, and we always talked about making music together. I never called anybody else, and we ended up making this batch of songs that we loved.”
The duo’s first single was “Drug,” which premiered in late January.
The official release date for the Strange Love EP is March 29th, and will feature both singles that have been released so far, plus four more songs.
The track listing:
- “Strange Love”
- “How to Live”
“Drug” is presented as an upbeat song, but focuses on the dark side of a struggling relationship. Drugs are compared to the dependency of that person and the weight it puts on the brain.
“Strange Love,” meanwhile, has a more hopeful outlook. The song debuted on Thursday along with a trippy, psychedelic music video. Both singles contain catchy, energetic choruses and have memorable hooks that make this project a perfect mashup of All Time Low and Blink-182.
Simple Creatures is a side project, and both artists have made it clear that the band won’t replace Blink-182 or All Time Low. A collaboration between Blink and The Chainsmokers has been in the works for a while, and the band itself is working on a follow-up to California now too.
All Time Low also revealed they would be taking a break in 2019 to end The Last Young Renegade cycle.
