A New Film Called ‘Yesterday’ Imagines a World Where Nobody Remembers the Beatles, and the Trailer is Wild

A New Film Called ‘Yesterday’ Imagines a World Where Nobody Remembers the Beatles, and the Trailer is Wild

The Beatles. You know them. We all know them. The world knows them.

Right?

The music of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison is among the most celebrated and culturally relevant to ever be recorded. But what if nobody remembered them at all, and it was as if their music just did not exist?

That’s the core theme of a new film called Yesterday, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis, starring Himesh Patel as the only man on the planet who remembers the Beatles. Ed Sheeran’s in there somewhere, too, as is Saturday Night Live‘s Kate McKinnon as a sarcastic music executive.

It’s an odd concept, for sure, but it makes for a pretty interesting trailer:

What? How? Why? All of these are valid questions upon watching that trailer for the film, which will be released on June 28. And it’s anybody’s guess as to how this film will be received critically and at the box office, but this whole concept is rather interesting from another angle completely.

Given today’s digital-first era of streaming and the “lost art” of the album as a musical medium, there is something to be said for a conversation about the relevance of the Beatles. Might Yesterday be able to help spread the message of the Beatles and their music to folks (read: younger audiences) who might not otherwise have as strong a connection to their music as their parents or grandparents?

That will be fascinating to see.

Wow, what an interesting idea! I was at Shea Stadium in NYC to see the Beatles in 1965 and it was one of the highlights of my life! I am now in my 60’s! It looks like a fun, entertaining film and I will definitely see it!
