Joan Jett is a legend, a true icon in the punk world and an inspiration to female rockers everywhere — and a new documentary film titled Bad Reputation aims to tell her influential story as she’d like to tell it.
The movie will be released in theaters and on demand on Sept. 28, and to ramp up anticipation a new song from Joan Jett and the Blackhearts was premiered earlier this week. Titled “Fresh Start,” it’s a high-energy romp with Jett’s signature vocal style and a ripping guitar solo. Listen to it below:
“Sometimes you need to say to yourself, ‘Am I still enjoying what I’m doing? I need to find the fire again,’” Jett explained to EW of the song. “Part of it was just thinking about rock in general. It’s always been a young person’s game, writing about sex, love and partying. As rock and rollers get older, what do they write about? I’m not sure there’s an answer, but we’re looking for it.”
More on the film, from its official site:
Jett put her hard work in long before the fame, ripping it up onstage as the backbone of the hard-rock legends The Runaways, starting her record label out of the trunk of a car after being rejected by 23 labels, and influencing many musicians—both her cohort of punk rockers and generations of younger bands—with her no-bullshit style. Bad Reputation gives you a wild ride as Jett and her close friends tell you how it really was in the burgeoning ’70s punk scene and the rocky road to rock stardom decades on. Their interviews are laced with amazing archival footage. The theme is clear: Even though people tried to define Jett, she never compromised. She will kick your ass, and you’ll love her all the more for it.
