The The were one of the most intriguing bands to emerge out of England in the late 1970s and early ’80s, crafting an important place in history with a succession of albums and hits that put band leader Matt Johnson on the map.
Johnson hasn’t toured with The The for nearly twenty years, but that’s all over now: On Tuesday, a special tour was detailed that will mark the first live performances by The The in 16 years. This comes after Johnson released a new song, “We Can’t Stop What’s Coming,” in 2017 for Record Store Day:
And the tour dates, which will take place in September:
Fri 9/14 Boston, MA Orpheum Theatre
Sun 9/16 Brooklyn, NY Brooklyn Steel
Mon 9/17 New York, NY Beacon Theatre
Wed 9/19 Toronto, ON Sony Centre for the Performing Arts
Fri 9/21 Detroit, MI Royal Oak Music Theatre
Sat 9/22 Chicago, IL Riviera Theatre
Mon 9/24 Los Angeles, CA Ford Theatre
Thu 9/27 San Francisco, CA The Masonic
As for the prospect of a new album, Johnson is open to the idea and sees it as a definite possibility:
“Yes, I’m feeling inspired and have already started writing it. I’m hoping to begin recording sessions later this year but this all depends on our touring schedule. ”
Here’s the classic “This Is The Day” to tide you over until any further news.
