New Music Friday: Stream Stone Temple Pilots’ Self-Titled Album, the First with New Singer Jeff Gutt

Listening to the new self-titled Stone Temple Pilots album, it’s impressive just how effective new vocalist Jeff Gutt is. Gutt, the third singer in STP history after longtime vocalist/lyricist Scott Weiland and Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, fits in exceedingly well with holdovers Robert DeLeo, Dean DeLeo and Eric Kretz.

The album was released on Friday and marks another new chapter in the band’s storied alt/rock history. “Meadow” was the first song released from the LP, and is more or less one of the record’s standout tracks. Listening to the album, however, many of the tracks fit in nicely alongside some of STP’s “legacy” records from the 1990s — songs like “Just A Little Lie,” for one, while “Thought She’d Be Mine” shines in the same vein as one of the band’s signature mid-tempo tracks.

“The Art of Letting Go” and “Finest Hour,” however, are undeniably affecting in their eulogistic power, both in reference to Weiland and Bennington. They’re especially strong tracks on the album.

The story of Stone Temple Pilots is one of resiliency (something Robert DeLeo discussed with us in our new feature interview). They vowed to only carry on if the music spoke for itself and if they felt they had something to say, and this new record backs that up.

The “rock and roll” realm today is devoid of bands like Stone Temple Pilots on the whole, so this is a refreshing, if familiar, blast of high-energy alt/rock that will probably catch some fans by surprise.
